Having to commute into the big city for a tech job sucks, I like living in the country
Currently in the Vancouver area most of the tech jobs are in the city. This means that you either commute up to 2 hours *each way* if you live farther out where it's affordable to live, or you have to move into a shoebox sized apartment that costs an arm and a leg in either a mortgage or rent just to cut that commute down to 20-30 minutes (if you're lucky). I live in the country a 1.5h train commute from Vancouver ($360/month FYI) in a nice little house, in a quiet area with a small yard and pets. My choices for employment as a tech worker are either to change my career and become a farmer, take my chances with self employment, or uproot my family and life to switch my house for something that's 5 times as expensive and a third the size. If I'm lucky.
What should people do about it?
